Here’s a stroke of genius: Vienna is restoring St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Rather than cover their precious, iconic landmark with big ugly tarps, they covered it with with tarps that look like what the Cathedral is supposed to look like; slightly enlarged. How cool is that?
Check out these photos and see if you spot the tarps right away:

It’s a little tricky, right?

That’s an easy one.

Isn’t this brilliant?

It’s definitely not the real thing, but you could walk by and not even notice.
So. Smart.

Nice shots, I just came back from Montreal. They did the same cover up on those old church and building. I guess United State is the only one that hasn’t done that yet.
Great post!

Yes, it’s brilliant! Finally!
Some years ago they used the scaffold around the spire as a wall for a big ad but finally they have changed their mind. Thanks for your post!

Yea Annie, unfortunately I didn’t take the picture of that. But I saw a church on Notre-Dame Street in Old Montreal that has the same thing. Maybe it’s just a European way? : )

Travelwriticus – I can’t believe they did that. It’s frightening to picture!
Sarah – Must be. We should learn from our elders.
